Over the past few years, hair loss (alopecia) has become a very common concern from many patients. It is a complex issue that is often oversimplified by the media and brushed aside by healthcare providers. However, multiple studies have shown that hair loss significantly decreases one’s self confidence and is a very prevalent issue in today’s society. The first step is identifying the type(s) of hair loss a patient is experiencing and working to correct the underlying cause when possible. Hidradentitis suppurativa (HS) is an immune-mediated condition that causes painful boils deep in the skin. It often occurs in areas where skin meets skin- like the armpits, groin, buttocks, and under the breasts. It occurs in both men and women, but women are more likely to have the condition. HS can be a very frustrating and painful condition and should be treated by a skin expert. Unfortunately, patients often feel alone, embarrassed, or as though they caused the lesions by being “dirty.” This is simply untrue. Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated, inflammatory skin condition. It most commonly affects the knees, elbows, scalp, ears, and trunk by forming thick, red plaques covered with silver scales. It can vary in appearance and locations and by severity. It can also affect the joints of the body and should be treated by an expert in skin conditions. If there is internal involvement, it is very important to start medications that can prevent and even reverse this damage and inflammation. Warts are one of the most common skin conditions treated in Dermatology, and yet one of the most persistent. Warts are caused by a viral infection call the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). There are over 150 known strands of HPV and cutaneous warts are typically caused by a common subset of these strands. They are spread by contact, especially in areas of the body prone to being dry. The dry, cracked skin provides a portal of entry and it is easier for a wart to form. Treatment options are aimed at debridement of the infected skin and triggering the body’s immunize system to fight the virus. As there is no harm from these strands, the body chooses to ignore the lesions in many cases. Warts can persist through multiple treatments and for years at a time. Even when they appear to be resolved, they can recur causing frustration in patients.
