Medical dermatology is a branch of medicine that specializes in the hair, skin, and nails and the conditions that affect them. We are a nurse practitioner-owned office with over fifteen years of expertise working in skin health. There are thousands of known skin conditions and many of their diagnoses and treatments require advanced training in the field.
Below are a few examples of the more common skin conditions our office treats.
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. It can be related to genetics, sun exposure, and other factors as well. The three primary types are Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and Melanoma. Identifying skin cancers early is a VITAL step in taking care of one’s skin. Our office provides skin cancer screenings to check patients for visible signs of cancer or early precancerous changes that may become harmful. Most skin cancers, when identified early, can be treated effectively so regular skin checks are very important. Our office strives to make these visits as comfortable as possible for our patients.
Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis) is an inflammatory skin condition that can occur at any age, but most commonly develops under the age of 5. It has been linked to genetics, bacteria, and other lifestyle causes. It may cause severe itching and dry skin changes and is often associated with allergies and asthma. It is very important to maintain a gentle skin care regimen that includes avoiding irritants like fragrances and over-washing, and applying emollients regularly to enhance the skin barrier. There are a plethora of prescription advances that have been developed over the past decade that can significantly improve the quality of life for a patient with eczema, so please schedule today if you would like to discuss options.
Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when pores become clogged and an inflammatory reaction occurs. There are multiple factors that lead to acne and a treatment regimen typically needs to include many components. Oftentimes acne is presented in the media and marketing as a simple problem to “fix” with one product, or that it is "normal in the teenage years." Anyone who has suffered with acne can tell you otherwise. It is also myth that acne goes away once everyone reaches adulthood. It can be a severe, lifelong problem that can truly impact a person’s quality of life. Schedule today if you have concerns with acne and know that our team understands and would be honored to discuss your options and provide a regimen tailored just to your skin.
Over the past few years, hair loss (alopecia) has become a very common concern from many patients. It is a complex issue that is often oversimplified by the media and brushed aside by healthcare providers. However, multiple studies have shown that hair loss significantly decreases one’s self confidence and is a very prevalent issue in today’s society. The first step is identifying the type(s) of hair loss a patient is experiencing and working to correct the underlying cause when possible. Our office strives to work with each patient, giving them answers, even if the answer is not what we’d hope for. Advances have been made over the past few years and we are happy to discuss your personal options if you are experiencing alopecia.
Hidradentitis suppurativa (HS) is an immune-mediated condition that causes painful boils deep in the skin. It often occurs in areas where skin meets skin- like the armpits, groin, buttocks, and under the breasts. It occurs in both men and women, but women are more likely to have the condition. HS can be a very frustrating and painful condition and should be treated by a skin expert. Unfortunately, patients often feel alone, embarrassed, or as though they caused the lesions by being “dirty.” This is simply untrue. Please give our office a call if you have been struggling with these lesions or if you suspect you may have HS. You are not alone and there are many advances in helping patients manage these lesions and get their lives and confidence back.
Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated, inflammatory skin condition. It most commonly affects the knees, elbows, scalp, ears, and trunk by forming thick, red plaques covered with silver scales. It can vary in appearance and locations and by severity. It can also affect the joints of the body and should be treated by an expert in skin conditions. If there is internal involvement, it is very important to start medications that can prevent and even reverse this damage and inflammation. Multiple treatment options are now available for psoriasis and we are happy to discuss options with you!
Warts are one of the most common skin conditions treated in Dermatology, and yet one of the most persistent. Warts are caused by a viral infection call the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). There are over 150 known strands of HPV and cutaneous warts are typically caused by a common subset of these strands. They are spread by contact, especially in areas of the body prone to being dry. The dry, cracked skin provides a portal of entry and it is easier for a wart to form. Treatment options are aimed at debridement of the infected skin and triggering the body’s immunize system to fight the virus. As there is no harm from these strands, the body chooses to ignore the lesions in many cases. Warts can persist through multiple treatments and for years at a time. Even when they appear to be resolved, they can recur causing frustration in patients. Warts can be treated with persistence and patience so please give us a call if you are struggling with these lesions.
The DermTech Melanoma Test non-invasively detects genomic markers associated with melanoma to differentiate benign lesions from those at higher-risk for melanoma. It has a 99% negative predictive value (NPV), meaning that with a negative test result, there is a 99% probability that the lesion is not melanoma. It is a painless testing process that is performed quickly at your office visit. Through a series of 4 specialized sticker applications, the sampling of the superficial skin cells on your mole are sent to the lab. No cutting! No pain! If the results indicate the mole is at a higher risk of melanoma, we simply schedule a follow up procedure where it is surgically removed with a minimally invasive procedure. Currently, it is only approved for patients 18 years of age or older. We have utilized this test in hundreds of patients and it has become invaluable in our office.
